Serenity And Chaos:
Perspectives on Sculpture
by Sun Hee Cho Oberfoell
As a native of South Korea, my work is influenced by traditional Korean forms of sculpture as well as the work of Western artists. For me, making art is a way of creating silence and serenity out of chaos. My work often wrestles with questions of what lies beneath the surface and of how emotional difficulties can cause us to grow in wisdom and insight.
I am fascinated by the human body and its infinite expressiveness. Through portraits of people close to me, I hope to show how the universal can emerge from the particular. I specialize in sculpting the human body in reflective thought and silence. My desire is to help people experience serenity and silence in themselves when they view my work.
In Korea, I worked extensively in a variety of media, including wood, stone, and metal, beginning with clay models and proceeding through all stages including coloring. My current portfolio reflects primarily work done in paper mache, polyester resin and some bronze, but I am experienced in many other forms of sculpture. I have also extensive experience painting in acrylic and watercolor.
Making art is my way of deepening my connection to what is universal so that I can transcend the worries and difficulties of this world. I hope that those who view my sculptures and paintings may have the chance to reflect on these deeper meanings as well.
